The Challenge
The client, a building envelope material manufacturer serving prefabricated construction projects, required a dedicated batch of RAL9016 white PPGI color coated steel coils for exterior wall and roof panel production. The order was not a standard single-thickness purchase: it required five different thickness specifications — 0.30mm, 0.33mm, 0.35mm, 0.38mm, and 0.40mm — all with exactly the same RAL9016 white finish. Any visible batch-to-batch color shift would create costly mismatches once panels were cut, formed, and installed side-by-side on building facades. In addition to strict color consistency, the client needed full coils, each with a net weight of 8 tons, to match their downstream decoiling, cut-to-length, and bending production line. The entire 40-ton order had to be delivered FOB Shanghai Port under export terms. That meant the coils required ocean-freight-grade packaging, complete export documentation, and careful coordination with the client’s freight forwarder. With a 60-day contractual lead time and a 12-month product warranty required after goods acceptance, this was a demanding custom color coated steel coil supply project rather than a routine stock sale. —Our Solution
We approached the order as a custom color matching and production campaign. Our technical team converted the client’s RAL9016 target into a production color standard for our coil coating line and scheduled all five thickness specifications within a single continuous production run. By producing the full order back-to-back, we minimized coating system changes and kept color difference, or ΔE, stable across every coil and every thickness. The process began with galvanized steel substrate selection for building envelope applications. After cleaning and chemical pretreatment, each coil received the RAL9016 white top coat and was cured in-line. Every finished coil was then inspected for film thickness, color consistency, coating adhesion, and surface defects. Each coil was rewound to a net weight of 8 tons and wrapped in export-grade moisture-resistant packaging. We also prepared mill certificates, coating test reports, packing lists, and the full set of FOB export documents required for handover at Shanghai Port. —Results & Outcome
All 40 tons were produced, inspected, and delivered within the 60-day contract period. The five thicknesses showed uniform RAL9016 white appearance, confirmed by color difference testing before shipment. The client’s incoming inspection was completed without color, coating, or surface quality claims, and the 12-month warranty was activated as agreed. Because each coil arrived full-weight, clean, and properly protected, the client moved directly into decoiling and panel forming without rework or recoating. The consistent paint adhesion and stable color across all thicknesses also supported the client’s downstream processing of exterior wall and roof building envelope systems, helping them maintain their own assembly schedule. —Project Gallery
