The Ferritic Structure

Unlike austenitic stainless steels (304, 316, etc.) which have a face-centered cubic (FCC) crystal structure, 430 has a body-centered cubic (BCC) ferritic structure at all temperatures. This means:

Fabrication Considerations

Welding

Forming

430 has good formability for most bending, roll forming, and moderate drawing operations. However, because of its BCC structure, it has less ductility at room temperature than austenitic grades. Deep drawing may require warm forming or intermediate annealing.

Machining

430 has fair to good machinability. It machines similarly to carbon steel but with slightly higher tool wear. Free-machining variants like 430F are available for better machinability.

Heat Treatment

430 cannot be hardened by heat treatment - it can only be hardened by cold working. Annealing is done at 790-815 deg C followed by air cooling, which softens the material and restores ductility after cold working.
